Joint Labor Management Committee
of the Retail Food Industry

Highlights from the JLMC’s Fall 2024 General Membership Meeting

The Joint Labor Management Committee of the retail food industry (JLMC) held its fall Trustee and General Membership Meetings on October 23rd and 24th in Cincinnati, Ohio.

At our meetings, we bring our Trustees and members together with industry experts to discuss issues in the retail grocery industry that we are all concerned about. Our goal is to provide a forum for the discussion of these important issues.

At the fall meeting, members heard from industry experts on a variety of topics, including:

  • A discussion about the drivers of high-cost health claims facilitated by Ed Kaplan, Segal’s National Health Practice Leader;
  • A presentation on advances in cancer care by Cancer Navigator co-founder Adam Bradley;
  • An overview of the US Department of Labor’s Labor-Management Partnership Program led by Darnice Marsh, the Labor-Management Partnership Coordinator at the Dept. of Labor;
  • A conversation about promoting corporate and government accountability in economic development led by Greg LeRoy, Executive Director of Good Jobs First, and Ademola Oyefeso, JLMC Trustee and UFCW Vice President and Director of Legislative and Political Affairs;
  • A discussion about helping provide financial literacy education to hourly workers led by Bennett Hadley, an actuarial consultant at Segal;
  • An update on the Chevron deference standard after the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this year (Loper Bright) from JLMC counsel and Slevin & Hart Principal Jeffrey Endick;
  • A conversation about artificial intelligence in the retail grocery industry and employee benefits co-facilitated by Kimberly Betts, Managing Director at Deloitte, and Michael Stoyanovich, a Vice President and Senior Consultant in Segal’s Administration & Technology Practice;
  • A lively discussion about women’s wellness in the workplace hosted by Lana Saal, the CEO of VitHealthity and an Associate Director Community Education at the American Diabetes Association; and
  • A tour of a Kroger facility and an update on Kroger’s public-facing initiatives from Jon McPherson, JLMC Trustee and Vice President Labor and Associate Relations at The Kroger Company.

The JLMC holds two meetings each year over the course of two days—one in the spring and one in the fall.
